Yamaha BB605 5 String Reviews  5 / 5 based on 2 reviews I was in the market for a good 5 string bass to compliment my old precision and had been looking for a while. I popped into Oasis Musical Instruments in Ringwood to try out some new amplification and there on the wall was a good looking 5 string bass in a natural wood finish with gold hardware, a Yamaha BB605. I was expecting the price tag to read in excess of £600 so was really surprised to learn that it was only necessary to dent the card to the tune of £379.00
The first impression was striking, the gold hardware really sets of the natural wood finish.
One other immediate thing I liked is that when handled the guitar was not heavy or cumbersome, but well balanced with a nice smooth rounded feel to the neck. The body is well shaped and the strings are well spaced with a fast easy action.
The sound controls are placed in a neat configuration and easy to set. I particularly liked the extra depth and sound obtained with the active setting.
After 10 minutes my mind was made up, this was the guitar I was looking for.
What's not to like. this is a good looking great sounding guitar at a bargain price. If I was disappointed in anything it was the fact that this great looking guitar was not supplied with a tailor made case to go with it. I would happily have paid that little extra.
The guitar is well constructed. The tuning heads are firm but smooth and the electronics are sound with no hums or crackles.
This is a whole lotta guitar for the money. I would have paid more!! Steve Bowley rated this unit on 2003-01-20. I got this bass at a little music shop in Richmond, VA for around $450. I bought it after trying out the last model that the local Mars Music had. That was bought before I got the money to get it.
The question is what I don't like. The wider string spacing is awesome. It's got a great sound. I keep the mid knob set in one spot and the mid switch on. I can adjust it, just with the bass, treble, and pickup blend controls, to approximate many different artists' sounds, from P-Nut of 311 to John Myung of Dream Theater. I like the gold hardware, the action, the 24 frets, the finish, the headstock. To me it's the perfect bass.
My only complaint is that it doesn't have trim pots inside the unit to tweak the active controls. That's it. I'm normally very picky when it comes to basses, so the fact that I only have one complaint is pretty damn good.
Construction was superb. Great instrument. Quality was great. I can't stress enough how much I love this bass.
